Kill The Cold Virus with OTC Nasal Spray

An ingredient Oxymetazoline which is found in many of the  over-the-counter (OTC) nasal sprays, may kill the virus that causes the common cold.  A few studies have discovered this drug compound to have an antiviral effect, especially against the rhinovirus, the main virus responsible for the common cold.

The participant in these studies who received a saline solutions, showed no significant reduction in virus levels. While participants receiving the nasal sprays containing oxymetazoline showed a significant reduction in the rhino-virus levels.

Many of the popular brands such as Afrin, Dristan 12 Hour Nasal Spray, Duramist Plus and Vicks Sinex 12 Hour Nasal Spray, contain oxymetazoline.   The study cautioned that not only do these sprays reduce virus levels and provide temporary relief of nasal congestion, continual or long term use of these OTC nasal drugs could lead to nasal tissue damage and chronic congestion.
