Child Cardiac Arrest in Sports

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Can a child suffer from cardiac arrest while playing sports? Actually yes, there have been recorded incidents in football, basketball, hockey, karate and even in soccer. Before everybody begins pulling their child from all sports, let take a look at this very rare condition.

“Commotio Cordis” or a lethal disruption of a child’s heart rhythm, happens when a child receives a blow to the chest at a very specific time during a heartbeat. Usually within a specific 10-30 milliseconds time period. After the heart squeezes out blood, it goes through a resetting process before the next contraction. If a child receives a blow to the chest during this resetting period, the heart can begin to quiver. This quivering action is called ventricular fibrillation and in most situations, the method to cure this condition is called defibrillation, which is done with the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

Though this condition is rare it is best to have coaches and other personnel trained in CPR. Make sure 911 is called immediately and if possible, have your organization consider purchasing and having an AED available.

Studies have shown that resuscitation rates increase dramatically when an AED is used within three minutes of a child going into ventricular fibrillation. The longer it takes for this to happen the chances of survival can decrease sharply. In most cases, waiting for the ambulance to arrive, may be too late.

Commotio cordis is scary, but very rare and is unlikely to happen to your child. Encourage your children to play sports and other physical activities, just be prepared to act in case of an emergency.

Flesh Eating Bacteria

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The CDC reports that each year approximately 35 people die from infections associated with a water based bacteria that causes severe tissue damage and breaks down the skin. This fleshing eating bacteria is found in the warmer Gulf Coast waters around Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Even if you don’t live in one of these states, travel and vacations can expose people who live in other states.

As the waters warm in the gulf each summer, it brings an increase of a bacterial infection called Vibrio vulnificus – also known as the “flesh eating” bacteria. Those infected will experience vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The skin can redden, ooze with puss and wounds will continue to grow in size. Those with depressed or immature immune systems this can be a fatal infection. When infected, surgeons will need to remove the dead tissue and clean out the wound. Special bandages will need to be replaced on a regular basis. Patients will then receive antibiotic treatments that could last up to 14 days.

While this flesh eating bacterial infection is rare, you can take a few precautions. First cover all exposed wounds while swimming or playing in the coastal salt waters of the gulf. Better yet consider avoiding any direct contact with these waters when you have a skin wound. Also, avoid eating any uncooked seafood’s that are harvested from the gulf, such as oysters.

First Aid for Poisonous Bites

Posted by: | Comments (0)

With more outdoor activities, the potential of getting bitten by a spider or insect increases. Though not all bites are poisonous, several are and if bitten, first aid treatment is immediately necessary. Here is a list of possible poisonous bites and their treatments:

Black Widow Spider
Though rarely lethal a black widow bite can be serious. You can identify the black widow spider by the red hourglass marking on its belly. The black widow spider bite may not be painful at first. In fact, you may not even feel the bite. Soon afterwards you’ll begin to notice a bit of swelling and red marks developing. If not treated immediately, intense pain will develop stiffness, chills, fever, severe abdominal pain and vomiting will occur. Seek immediate medical attention and anti-venom treatments.

Brown Recluse Spider
The brown recluse is identifiable by the violin shaped marking on its back and it can produce a mild sting when it bites. Within a few hours local redness will develop at the bite site along with intense pain. A fluid filled blister will develop and pop leaving a gaping ulcer in the skin.
Clean the wound site with plain soap and water. Tie a snug bandage just above the bite site and towards the heart to slow the progression of the venom. DO NOT tie the bandage so tight that it cuts off circulation. Apply a cold cloth or a bag of water and ice combined to the injured site. Seek immediate medical attention.

Bee, Yellow Jacket, Wasp, Hornet
Bees lose their stingers when they sting and die soon after, but yellow jackets, wasp and hornets don’t lose their stingers and can inflict multiple stings. Most people will experience local mild swelling and itching. Taking an oral antihistamine for the itching and acetaminophen for the pain will be all the treatment you’ll need. Though some people can have a severe anaphylactic reaction. For those individuals, the use of an epipen (epinephrine auto-injector) would be necessary and continue to seek immediate medical attention.

Fire Ants
Found in most of the southern part of the United States, these ants look similar to most other ants. Except they can produce a powerful and painful sting. These ants will attach themselves to the skin with a powerful bite and produce several stings from their abdomen. This venom can cause red bumps that burn and itch. Also a painful puss-filled lesions may also occur. Ice packs antihistamines and pain relievers may relieve some of the discomfort. If a larger amount of stings occur, a severe life-threatening reaction may result. Immediate medical attention is needed.

Puss Caterpillar
Yes there is a Caterpillar that can be harmful to your health. This long haired Caterpillar has stingers hidden underneath their hairy body. When stung, a person will feel intense pain, develop a rash, accompanied by a fever, vomiting and severe muscle cramps. Remove stingers by using cellophane tape and seek medical attention.

Scorpions
Found mostly in the Southern and Western states and scorpion sting can be life-threatening. Though not all scorpions are venomous, those that are can cause a painful sting. If stung, you’ll experience severe pain, increased sweating, swelling, vomiting, itching and vision problems. Immediate medical attention is necessary.

Mosquitos
Other than causing an annoyance and bite that causes us to itch, the mosquito can carry and transfer blood borne viruses like West Nile virus, Dengue fever virus and the Chikungunya virus. If you begin to experience a high fever, joint and/or back pain, vomiting and develop a rash, see your physician.

Fountain of Youth Here?

Posted by: | Comments (0)

A recent study out of Stanford University, hints to the possibility. Resurrecting an old experiment for the 1950’s, scientist merged the blood vessels of a young rat with the same vessel in a much older rat. Allowing the blood of the younger rat to flow through the older rat and visa-versa.

After 5 weeks, the team of scientist found increased neuron activity on the older rat. Also, the older rats muscle and liver tissue healed and grew at the same rate of the youthful rat. Scientist were able to isolate a specific protein called GDF11 as one of the components to this youthful regress.

Rats given GDF11 through injection, showed improved heart muscle activity, but not to the same extent as to the rats that shared the same blood vessels. This leaves open the probability that there must be other components involved other than GDF11 alone.

These experiments are extraordinary, in the fact that not only is there the possibility that we can slow down the aging process, but perhaps we may even be able to reverse it. Actually becoming younger.

As with all new studies, more experimentation is needed, and eventually human trials would need to be successful before this could become a practice. But if successful, could we be on the verge of dramatically extending the human life span? And if so, what new moral and ethical questions would we need to resolve.

Hazards of Taking NSAIDs

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Many of us know that taking too many milligrams of NSAIDS can have a detrimental effect on your liver, causing possible liver failure. But did you know that taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen and Celebrex may increase your chance of a fatal heart attack or a debilitating stroke? Experts have been taking a closer look at NSAIDs to see if there are any side effects that could increase the potential of a stroke or cardiovascular death.

In one recent study the potential risk of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or stroke was increase by fourfold. In fact, ibuprofen was revealed to have a three times increase of a stroke for a patient compared to when given a placebo. Though it is also important to note that many patients in this study had osteoarthritis and would be on some type of long term NSAID treatment, were older and could have other associated diseases, such as high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol levels, that may have more of an impact on the higher incidents of heart attacks or strokes.

In any event, you should discuss with your doctor all the variables before beginning a long term NSAID therapy. NSAIDs can also cause gastrointestinal problems such as ulcers and bleeding, but they are the most effective treatment for the relief of chronic pain. Also inquire with your physician about prescribing the lowest possible dosage.

Cleaning a Wound with Maggots

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Many of the earliest medical records show that maggots have been used in the process of wound healing. Over the years and the advent of antibiotics, their use has declined, but recently they have had a re-emergence as an acceptable form or modern medicine.

Prior to maggot therapy, a surgical procedure was used. The area was numbed and the unhealthy tissue was cut away. Now with the increase of drug resistant infections, maggot therapy for wound cleaning and healing is starting to make a substantial comeback as a recognized medical treatment.

Several studies on maggot wound therapy, has shown that the healing process is much quicker and less intrusive than conventional surgical wound cleaning. Also the maggot larvae secrete a substance that helps fight wound infection.

Some practitioners of this type of therapy place the maggots directly upon the wound, where they eat away only the dead tissue, leaving health tissue alone. Others have developed a process where the maggots are placed strategically in a dressing that is placed over the wound and changed on a regular basis.

Believe it or not the FDA does regulates the use of maggots, and they are only available through a doctor’s prescription. They may not be a treatment for all infected wounds, but they are an effective, inexpensive and safe alternative which many insurance companies are beginning to recognize and cover.

Unfortunately this is true and has an impact. The amount of alcohol you consumed while in your 20’s and could still function, can now put you under the table. As we age our bodies retain less water, making it harder for us to metabolize the alcohol. This slower rate of processing alcohol weakens our resistance. Which means the alcohol stays in our bodies for a longer period of time and gives us a higher blood alcohol percentage.

Alcohol can also make certain age-related health problems worse. High blood pressure, diabetes, liver ailments and memory problems can worsen when taking large amounts of alcohol. Typically we take more medications as we age, which increases the risk of an alcohol-drug interaction. These alcohol-drug interactions can cause confusion, instability while walking, nausea or other medical problems.

It’s best to realize as you age you won’t be able to drink as you did when you were younger, but it’s not all negative. The positive side is, it won’t cost you as much to get to that happy state. So let’s enjoy one of the few benefits of getting older.

Remember it is never safe to drink and drive!

Kill The Cold Virus with OTC Nasal Spray

Posted by: | Comments (0)

An ingredient Oxymetazoline which is found in many of the  over-the-counter (OTC) nasal sprays, may kill the virus that causes the common cold.  A few studies have discovered this drug compound to have an antiviral effect, especially against the rhinovirus, the main virus responsible for the common cold.

The participant in these studies who received a saline solutions, showed no significant reduction in virus levels. While participants receiving the nasal sprays containing oxymetazoline showed a significant reduction in the rhino-virus levels.

Many of the popular brands such as Afrin, Dristan 12 Hour Nasal Spray, Duramist Plus and Vicks Sinex 12 Hour Nasal Spray, contain oxymetazoline.   The study cautioned that not only do these sprays reduce virus levels and provide temporary relief of nasal congestion, continual or long term use of these OTC nasal drugs could lead to nasal tissue damage and chronic congestion.

Always discuss with your physician before starting any health or medical treatment.

Anxiety Can Increase Stroke Risk

Posted by: | Comments (0)

It has been widely recognized that smoking and high blood pressure are known stroke risk indicators, but new studies may indicate that increased anxiety can also be a risk factor. Everyone experiences some sort of anxiety and in some cases anxiety can be good. Anxiety helps us to be alert of danger, improves our awareness, and for some people acts as a motivational tool.

But elevated or chronic anxiety can have negative physical and psychological effects. Anxiety is the most common mental health issue people face. Heighten anxiety can increase the release of stress hormones, elevate your heart rate and increase blood pressure and these factors over an extended period of time can increase your stroke risk.

Whether the related factors with elevated anxiety are the culprit or a direct relationship to anxiety itself is still to be determined, but chronic heighten anxiety has been evaluated as a significant factor for increased stroke risk.
Strokes are the third leading cause of death in adults. “FAST” actions can play a significant part in the impact of the stroke. Recognize the symptoms and get medical attention quickly.

Using the “FAST” acronym can help you remember these simple steps.
F – Face, look for sagging of the face on one-side. Ask the person to smile.
A – Arms, ask the person to try and raise both arms. Look for difficulty on one-side.
S – Speech, have the person speak a simple sentence like, “my name is _____”
